If anyone asks, “What is the key to success in college?”, most professors would say study early, attend the lectures, do the homework. All of these are very typical things you hear throughout schooling. And even though I did all of the aforementioned activities, I had a secret trick up my sleeve: work with the old people.
And that's how I met Dale.
Being a typical college student, I enrolled right after high school. Like all starry-eyed eighteen year olds, I was ambitious to meet new people, try new things, and explore this world with people my age. But most importantly, without parental supervision. Then, to my dismay, in my first college class ever, I was partnered up with the only non-traditional student there. So while everyone was making friends for the semester, I was getting to know forty-something year old Philip. Throughout that semester we worked together, and we worked together well. It was then I learned my real trick to college - work with the non-traditional students.
Flash forward a couple years and I'm sitting in class on the first day hearing everyone introduce themselves. As the introductions make their way around the room they get to Dale, who introduces himself as an “extreme kayaker” (he never even mentioned the part about him being in MMA; it took another student who recognized him to do that!). After hearing his story and adventures, I had to work with him. And although I can't remember exactly how we started talking, I knew this was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
While in school I studied Business Management with a Concentration in Management Information Systems and a Minor in Computer Science, which is a way-too-long way to say IT. I always enjoyed computers, and seeing what people were able to do with them amazed me. Seeing computers both as tools for work and devices for entertainment made me want to dive deeper into them. Thus I tried to learn as much as possible, from programming and networking to video game design and video editing. I hope to use these skills to help deliver the best possible online experience. Financial systems can be daunting, and I take that as a challenge to get them into easily digestible information.
When not in the office, you can catch me at a local music venue or movie theater. I adore Maine and especially the artists that come out of it. I love seeing small local bands play in venues barely big enough to hold 40 people. I attend many local film events, from Maine film festivals to 16mm showings of classic movies. If a film was made in Maine, you can certainly expect to see me in the audience. I loved seeing the state on the silver screen and hearing the stories that Mainers have to say. If you ever see me in the audience, feel free to come say hi!
